A methodical, honest, and objective analysis of what worked and what failed during the 3,000-mile American crossing.
1. Managing the Support Team's Sleep Rotations
The most common mistake made by inexperienced support crews is focusing entirely on the rider's sleep while neglecting their own. Tired drivers, confused navigators, and sleepy nutrition specialists make fatal errors. During the debriefing, you must analyze the rotation schedule's efficiency:
- The 8-hour shift rotation: Did it work? Was the transition between the active follow car and the resting RV smooth, or did logistics cause delays?
- RV sleep quality: Was the RV parked in quiet, ventilated spots during the day, or did the crew suffer from heat and generator noise?
The golden rule remains: crew fatigue directly impacts decision-making during the rider's crises. If the crew is exhausted, the rider will pull out.
2. VHF Communications and Navigation: Avoiding Route Errors
VHF radio is the umbilical cord between the Follow Car and the rider. In the debriefing, evaluate communication quality:
