The first 500 miles of the Race Across America (RAAM) are a brutal test of biological and logistical survival. From the starting line at Oceanside Pier, cooled by the Pacific Ocean, racers are quickly plunged into one of the hottest and most unforgiving regions on earth. The ocean breeze gives way to the suffocating heat of the Anza-Borrego Desert, the Glamis Sand Dunes, and the Arizona plateau. Across these first 10 Time Stations, managing heat, hydration, and support regulations dictates who survives to climb the Rockies and who suffers an early DNF.
1. The California Desert: Descending into the Oven
The race begins with an unsupported zone extending from the Oceanside start line to the I-15 overpass. In this section, support vehicles are prohibited, and riders must rely entirely on their legs. Beyond the I-15, primary support vehicles can join the rider as they head toward Time Station 1 in Borrego Springs via the steep and winding descent of "The Glass Elevator."
The leg from Borrego Springs to Brawley (TS 2) features the lowest point of the entire RAAM route, sitting at 194 feet below sea level. Here, in the San Andreas Fault Zone, the trapped air and radiant road heat create furnace-like conditions even early in the morning.
2. Glamis Sand Dunes and the Arizona Border
Continuing east, the route cuts through the scenic Glamis Sand Dunes, running just 19.5 miles from the Mexican border. This area is notoriously difficult for the crew: support vehicles must contend with blowing sand on the shoulders and heavy crosswinds that can destabilize high-profile vans and RVs.
At the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint in Glamis, all riders and crew members must have their passports or IDs ready for inspection. A missing document here will halt the entire team for hours.
Immediately after crossing the Colorado River, teams enter Arizona at Time Station 4 (Parker). In Arizona, state regulations impose strict safety constraints: direct follow support is strictly prohibited during daylight hours for the first 60 miles past TS 9 (Flagstaff). The crew must use leapfrog support, stopping in turnouts to hand off bottles.
3. Climbing the Plateau: Yarnell Grade to Flagstaff
Leaving the flat desert floor behind (Salome TS 5, Congress TS 6), the road ramps up sharply at the famous Yarnell Grade. This climb transitions the race into the mountainous terrain of central Arizona, leading through Skull Valley and over the summit of Iron Springs Pass (6,153 feet) to reach Prescott (TS 7).
From Prescott, the route heads through Cottonwood (TS 8) and Sedona. Due to heavy traffic and tight clearances in the Sedona canyon, the race direction may implement a mandatory shuttle zone or strict vehicle width limits. RVs and large auxiliary vehicles must take a designated bypass route, meeting the rider later at Flagstaff (TS 9), which sits at an elevation of 6,900 feet.
4. Desert Logistics & Equipment Strategies
The golden rule of the desert is thermal regulation. Temperatures can exceed 110°F (43°C) during the day, yet drop below 50°F (10°C) at night on the mountain passes of Prescott and Flagstaff. The crew must ensure ice chest management is flawless to provide cold water and ice-collars for the rider.
Additionally, the vehicle self-inspection must be 100% compliant: reflective safety tape on wheels, crank arms, and vehicle frames are vital for the dark desert nights where streetlights do not exist.
